Last year was a stylish one, but it looks like 2016 could trounce 2015 when it comes to interior design. We’ve done some digging and have discovered some incredibly exciting design trends heading our way which will transform the ways in which we interact with our homes.
If you’re considering renovating or updating particular rooms in (or outside) your house this year, you’ll want to keep in mind the following design trends we’re likely to see in 2016.
Open living spaces
Picture your living room transformed into a huge, open space, directly connected with the garden beyond and integrating a practical dining and cooking area. It’s the future. In fact, it’s already here, for 2016 promises to be the year of the open living space. With homely fires warming those chilling out on the sofa whilst the chef of the family cracks on with dinner, the home is about to become a whole lot more inclusive.
Black metals
The prevalence of industrial-influenced interior design has spawned a new love of metal for worktops, tables, chairs and storage units in the home. Top of the list for many an interior designer this year will be black metal such as steel and iron. Non-fussy and eliciting an air of elegance and high-tech sophistication, black metals will likely be put to use in 2016 as flatware, bathroom fixtures and exposed frames for all manner of hardware installations.
Tassels, fringing and ornamentation
Nostalgia will be the name of the interior design game in 2016. The comforting sight of cushions with tassels or ornately-designed curtains will become a common fixture due to their uncanny ability to soften modern upholstery. Dramatic drapes and designs featuring Georgian and Empire cues will also make their way into many homes this year.
Fireplaces to take centre stage
We like this one. For as long as we can remember, the TV has typically been the focal point of living rooms throughout the world. In 2016, we expect to see a return to the more traditional, warming and eminently comforting centrepiece – the fireplace. The TV won’t be going anywhere, of course, but it will become less prominent such is the fireplace’s ability to take centre stage.
Statement mirrors
The bigger the better; mirrors are going to be very important this year. They create space and are quickly becoming one of the most prominent features in all sorts of rooms. Backlit, wood framed, vintage and modern-designed mirrors will cease being something into which we all wistfully stare and instead become a statement within any room they occupy.
Outdoor living
2016 is widely predicted to be the hottest year on record, and that means people across the UK will spend an awful lot more time in their back garden. As a result, expect to see devices, furniture and comforts such as fireplaces make a move from the interior of the house to outside.
